Time Commitment

Debate requires regular practices and competitions similar to any other sport or activity.  Depending on the style of debate you choose, there is flexibility in the schedule.

The JM Debate Team will meet regularly on Mondays and Fridays from 3:15 to 4:45 or so.  Practices involve learning more about the debate topic through research and discussions with teammates.  You will also work on speaking and questioning skills.  This whole process is a lot of fun!

Additional time is spent throughout the week as to work on the "case".  Much help will be provided in developing a case.  Team members can work in Ms. Felmlee's classroom Tuesday through Thursday before and after school.

All debaters choose which competitions to attend.  The JM Debate Team will schedule 2 to 3 meets during the months of October through early December for a total of at least six meets.  Competitions are always held on Saturdays, with the exception of a State Novice and Junior Varsity Meet in December.  This meet is a two day competition beginning on Friday and ending Saturday late afternoon.

Overall, students find that their time in debate is well invested.  They find it is rewarding to see the improvement in their debating skills as the season progresses.
