Chess Club
Chess Club meets Monday afternoons in the Mr. Johnson's Room from 3:15-4:15. The Monday meetings are open to all students who have an interest in playing chess. Activities include timed and untimed chess matches with other students playing at a wide range of ability levels, as well as occasional instruction and lessons intended to help students become better chess players.
There is also a competitive component. Chess club members are invited to participate in tournaments as members of the John Marshall Chess Team, which competes with other schools in the Rochester area during the winter and early spring months. Tournament play involves students at both the varsity and junior varsity levels, and varsity players have the opportunity to earn a John Marshall letter in chess. Five players compete in each of the four tournaments at the varsity level and 5 compete at JV. Team members also have the opportunity to attend a state chess tournament in the spring. See Mr. Johnson in room 3-002 for more information
