John Marshall Strength Training History

JM Strength Training History

Lou Branca, a longtime football and baseball coach and member of the J.M. Physical Education staff started the John Marshall Strength Training Program in 1983. As a coach, Lou saw the need for John Marshall to start a strength-training program to compete with the ever-increasing programs that were starting to show up around the metro-area, and the country. He also saw the benefits of strength training, as lifelong fitness for all students at John Marshall.

When Lou retired in 1986 John Jacobs took over and brought in the advent of computer programming, and was certified by the N.S.C.A. as a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist (C.S.C.A). John was also a veteran teacher and coach in our district for many years. John brought our program to a new level, and his contributions cannot be measured.

In 1996 John Jacobs retired, and I have been the strength training teacher ever since. I take great pride in giving students an opportunity to set and accomplish goals, bring self-esteem to a new level, and provide them with skills that will enable them to live healthier, more fulfilling lives.

I am very grateful for the groundwork that these men have set for me here at John Marshall High School. I am John Marshall alumni myself (1985), and have had a pleasure to watch this program grow, first as a student, and now as a teacher, and it has been a very rewarding experience.
